New Years Motivation

As I hit the gym for one of the first couple times this year, I re-noticed this quote on the wall of the Burns Wellness Center: “Through physical rigor, Through intellectual challenge, We seek to elevate the spirit.” I like this quote because it emphasizes the balance between the different parts of wellness. Physical wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities. This includes keeping a regular fitness routine, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep. The second line focuses on intellectual wellness which is the ability to open our minds to new ideas and experiences. St. Scholastica especially values this form of wellness as one of our Benedictine values is “Love of Learning.” The desire to learn new things, improve skills, and seek challenges in pursuit of lifelong learning contributes to intellectual wellness. Finally, this quote addresses spiritual wellness or peace and harmony in our lives. Spiritual wellness if often associated with finding your purpose in life or taking actions that reflect your morals. Pursuing healthy living and lifelong learning help us find this spiritual wellness because we are happy, healthy, and mentally stimulated.
