Harry Potter Universe

Our faculty Abroad sure know their students! Everyone in the London Study Abroad group was thrilled to be visiting Harry Potter Universe this week. This is the location of many surviving Harry Potter sets and thousands of props from the movies. I have stood where Daniel Radcliffe stood, walked where Emma Watson walked, and eaten where Rupert Grint has eaten.

It was absolutely amazing to see all of the behind the scenes work that went into making scenes like the Battle of Hogwarts and Gringots Bank. A lot of the more magical scenes I assumed were digitally produced such as the Monster book of Monsters. However, they actually produced mechanical versions that could move around. There was also a mechanical Buckbeak, Voldemort, Hagrid, Faux, and Hedwig, all which appeared in at least one of the films. I was most shocked to discover the door to the Chamber of Secrets was a working mechanics door.

Probably my favorite part of the tour was learning about the animal actors for Hedwig, Crookshanks, and Fang. Each character had several actor animals behind them that were used for different types of scenes. For example, one “Crookshanks” who was particularly naughty was used in scenes where he chased Scabbers. Another “Crookshanks” was used in scenes where he was held by Hermione as this cat “preferred to be held rather than do any work.” Each animal had a small informative placard telling where they were adopted from, which films they appeared in, as well as what their personalities were like. Many of them earned funny nicknames from the cast such as “Bully” or “Trouble.” Here is a few more pictures to enjoy!
