Graduate School Mock Interviews
Every Wednesday I have seminar with the McNair Scholars Program. Recently, we’ve been really focused on finishing and presenting our summer research projects but now we are getting back in gear for our graduate school prep work. Yesterday we met with Professor Hong-Ming Liang to practice group interview skills. In total, there were eight of us answering his questions. We had to practice strong eye contact, concise answers, and knowing when it was our turn to jump in with an answer, question, or comment. One thing I found difficult at first was giving specific examples in my answers. I think I tend to go for broad, cookie cutter answers when really it’s the specifics that make my own story stand out. Overall, this was an excellent chance to practice my interview skills and I can translate what I learned into phone interviews, Skype interviews, and personal statements.
