Research Poster Presentation (TPUP)

Monday, April 15th, 2019

Today we presented our research at the University of Wisconsin in Superior! We went there as a class of 10, and we joined 27 of our peers from UWS and UMD who were also presenting their research. First there was a one hour lecture on a culturally salient topic, and then there was the poster presentation itself. Presenting research in front of an audience might sound like an imposing endeavor to some, but truly, it is a most casual occasion in which people just talk about the intellectual projects that motivates them. At the event of the event, we all watched three students give an oral presentation overviewing their projects. Seeing how well done they were, part of me wished I had found the time to get an oral presentation together as well!

African Heritage Night

Sunday, April 7th, 2019

“Free food” might be the biggest buzz word on campus, but quality free food is rather uncommon. This is why yesterday was special. In collaboration with UMD, St. Scholastica students organized a traditional feast followed by a series of shows honoring African culture. The massive buffet was full of delicious food typical of countries from all throughout Africa, and it was brought directly from specialized restaurants in the cities. There were over 20 different things, and you could choose to try as many as you could fit in your generously sized plate. Contrary to my expectations, none of them were spicy, but the quality of the food easily exceeded all expectations! As for the shows, I unfortunately can’t say I witnessed them first hand, but I have heard–and feel obliged to report–that they were outstanding!

Fall 2018 Head of the Lakes Job & Internship Fair

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

The Head of the Lakes Job & Internship Fair is an annual general career fair open to all students and recent graduates from the College of St. Scholastica, UMD, and the University of Wisconsin Superior. UMD recently hosted the fair. I have been to the fair on two occasions and while I have been dismayed by the lack of opportunities for international students, am always appreciative of the connections I have made at the fair. This year, I noticed that only a handful of companies and organizations were open to recruiting international students for both internships and full time positions. Hopefully more orgs and companies participating in the future will be willing to extend such opportunities to international students as well!

The United for Africa (U4A) club celebrated the annual African Heritage Night this past Saturday. The event was organized in partnership with the BSA (Black Student Association) from UMD. This collaboration drew a massive crowd to the Mitchell Auditorium and lot’s of excellent performances from both CSS and UMD students.
