Campus Tours

Monday, October 24th, 2016

This week is an open house week on campus for high school students interested in the College of St. Scholastica so the halls are packed with potential students. Admissions is so full with tours that they actually had to turn down several groups of students including two Upward Bound groups. Because I am so heavily involved with TRIO programs on campus, I volunteered to give these two groups a tour. This was a new experience for me and it was fun to answer so many questions about how college has affected my life. Something I didn’t expect from this volunteer experience was noticing when students seemed to light up when I mentioned different things such as choir, the theater program, or the cadaver labs. I know that I helped these students feel more confident in their college pursuit and I hope I convinced some of them that St. Scholastica is the place to be!

Being a UB Team Leader

Monday, June 15th, 2015

For the past week, I’ve been working as a Team Leader for the Upward Bound summer program here at CSS. My job has been to supervise specifically a group of 9 students, along with supervising and planning events with a total of over 40 students. The students go to classes during the day, once they come back, we host a variety of activities for them and just overall keep an eye on them. The students stay here on campus, so even when I’m not on the clock I see them around during passing times and meals. Overall it was am exhausting week. I’m really happy I had the weekend off to recooperare from it. There was so many fun activities, by Friday night when the kids came home I was so tired I just wanted to sleep. During the first week we had a dodgeball tournament, Wacky Olympics, a bonfire, welcome mat creating, movie nights, a chocolate fountain, and tons of card and board games. Last night the students came back to campus and we had movie night in the Science auditorium. The next 5 weeks are going to fly by but its going to give me so many new experiences working with children.

Summer Job

Wednesday, March 25th, 2015

Yesterday I was offered the summer position I wanted, Team Leader at TRiO Upward Bound! So in June and July I will be living on campus being somewhat of an RA for high schoolers. Upward Bound is a federally funded program for high school students who are low-income and/or will be first generation college students. It helps prep them for college by providing tutoring, college touring, etc. I was in Upward Bound myself! At the college level TRiO offers Student Support Services (which CSS has). I’m really excited to work with the students because I was them just last year.
