Bird Viewing 2.0

Wednesday, September 18th, 2019

In today’s Field Biology class, we went bird watching again–this time on campus. We hiked through recondite trails I didn’t know, and observed the fauna that surrounded them. It was a peaceful walk interrupted only by quick net swings aimed at trapping bugs (part of an on-going assignment) and birds singing. I never really appreciated how close to nature CSS is. It’s backyard is, quite literally, a real forest!

Northland Running Races

Monday, January 15th, 2018

The northland is home to some of the most pristine views of Lake Superior. Trails like the Superior Hiking Trail parallel the north shore similar to scenic highway 61; the infamous first 18 mile stretch of Grandma’s Marathon. Duluth and the surrounding area has so many great places to run, walk, hike, or bike. My girlfriend and I have come to enjoy running together as a hobby. It has been something that her and I do for stress relief and just for fun. We just recently capped off signing up for races for the 2018 year and all three races are in the northland.

Trail Running & Research

Thursday, February 9th, 2017

I recently was a “test subject” for my 2nd year research project in the physical therapy program. It consisted of running on a flat concrete surface, flat snow covered surface, and snow covered trail surface while collecting PEDAR data. The test run went really well and we were able to note a few minor adjustments that need to be made before we begin to schedule our recruited participants.

Wildlife of Duluth

Tuesday, September 13th, 2016

Duluth is known for being an outdoor city. It boasts beautiful views of nature all throughout the area. Nature here, however, does not just include Lake Superior, waterfalls, birch and pine filled forests. It also includes the animals that call these areas home, including this black bear that ran across Howard Gnesen road as I was driving last night. I thought he was going to go up and ring the doorbell at this home.

Superior Hiking Trail

Having lived in Duluth for over 5 years now, I have come to love the northland outdoors. In addition, I have also come to enjoy running in my spare time – I just completed my first full marathon this summer – Grandma’s 40th Anniversary Marathon in Duluth. With my first marathon under my belt and a craving for more I am signed up for my next one that is set for September 10th.
