Lake Superior Gets Angry!

Monday, April 16th, 2018

There is no doubt that Lake Superior is upset about the delay of Spring weather here in the Northland. The waves from Lake Superior were crashing into the Canal Park shores the past few days during the most recent winter storm. My girlfriend and I thought it would be a good idea to go down and check out the “beauty” of the powerful Lake Superior. We may or may not have gotten a little too close and walked away soaked. It was quite the site along the Lakewalk as everything was covered in a thick layer of ice. There is always something new to see or witness around Duluth, if you are willing to brave the elements!

Power Outage

Monday, July 25th, 2016

CSS closed campus last Friday due to a power outage that affected more than 62,000 homes in Duluth, including mine. The power outage was due to a storm that hit the city last Thursday night. Today, a lot of debris and other issues have finally been completely taken care of. It was a process over the weekend but now the city of Duluth is back to normal.

Beach Day

Saturday, July 23rd, 2016

My boyfriend and I decided after my Upward Bound trip, but before I headed off to California, we needed a relax day. So as soon as I came back from Upward Bound and settled in my roommates apartment, we took off to Canal. This past week has been incredibly hot all across Minnesota and Duluth was no exception. There was a massive storm Thursday morning that left most of Duluth without power and a lot wind damage.  So that of course, means A/C was lacking for most people. Everyone was down in Canal to hopefully get some shade, food, or to cool down in the water. We went to get a malt then hid under a tree’s shade for a while. It wa so hot we barely decided to actually walk back to the car. Once we got to the car, we drove to Park Point, which was packed as well. We drove all the way to the end and found a spot at the actual park. By then, it was around 7 pm. The day has finally cooled off! We took a nice dip in the lake and layed out on our blanket for a while. What a nice end to a sweaty day.

Rain Rain Finally Went Away

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Sunday and Monday were the most dreary times of the semester. It poured and poured all day an night. Driving back from Cambridge became terrifying once I reached Carlton. The fog was so thick I could only see the car right ahead of me and the lane right beside me. Duluth is notorious for fog when it has a lot of moisture in the air. Scary and dangerous to drive in fog. I survived however. On Monday the walk to class was extremely windy and I was soaking wet wherever I hadn’t pulled my rain gear over title. It definitely proved my rain boots were a great investment. My roommate’s umbrella blew inside out and broke. The power flickered here and UMD’s power went completely out for a while. It was insane, like I said already. No other words. My friend gave me a ride back to Kerst after class which was nice. I spent the rest of the night for the most part cozies up on the couch and doing homework in my sweatpants.

Winter in here folks, time to pull out your parkas, put in your winter hats, and strap those boots on because today it is coming out in full storm mode. That’s the thing about Duluth, it always keeps you on your toes. One day we could have weather in the 70s, and the next we could have two feet of snow. The key is to always carry hot chocolate with you and a sled in case winter decides to rear its head again. Be safe out there everyone!
