An Open Letter to My Freshman Self

Wednesday, June 7th, 2017

Hey Chey,

College is scary and that is okay. You’re going to learn so much about who you are and how strong you can be. Nothing worth having is easy, and college is going to hammer this lesson home.
8 AM classes are not going to be easy any more. When you feel like you’re going to fall asleep, sit in the front of class. Cut down your caffeine consumption, that way you can use it when you really need it.
You are mentally ill, please make sure you are taking care of yourself. This is new information that a lot of other young adults are finding out too. You are not alone. Go to counseling services, talk to your doctor. Most of all, lean on your support system, they have your back.
Don’t expect things to fix themselves.

What is Sleep?

Thursday, February 16th, 2017

I think my body is having a hard time adjusting to student teaching. I’ve always been inclined to staying up too late, but now I have to get up early (some days I attempt to get up before 5, key word: attempt). It’s been weird adjusting to a “big girl” time schedule and bed time. I am exhausted by 8ish and am asleep by 9:30. Everyone else I know is staying up way later than that; my roommate even stays up until 1! I feel because of my early bed time I have been missing out on opportunities for socializing. Like on Valentines, some of my friends went out to dinner and to a movie, but they didn’t get off work until 8. Any late night plans I just can’t participate in for the sake of having enough sleep to make it through a school day. Lately I’ve been noticing my body retaliating though; I’ve slept through 3 alarms this week or fallen back asleep after attempting to wake up. Luckily I haven’t actually slept through all my alarms or winded up late for anything. I do definitely think my body is screaming, “YOU ARE A NIGHT OWL.”

Yoga + More Yoga

Wednesday, February 1st, 2017

I signed up for a variety of fitness classes. So far, I’ve made it to two kinds of yoga classes, Mindfulness Yoga and Power Yoga. I think I prefer Mindfulness Yoga because it focuses specifically on calming down and forgetting the worries of the day. It’s also at 7 so I don’t have to rush after getting back from school! Power Yoga is much more active and I found myself thinking about a million things during it. I definitely do feel sore afterward. I think I will continue both classes and add Dance Cardio to my schedule as well. I love how fitness classes are free at CSS so you never have to worry about putting $100 for trying something out. Go self care in the form of free fitness!

Rare Night to Myself

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

It’s rare that I’m home when my roommates are not.

But one already left for the break and the other is out for the night. Which means pajamas, dancing (very poorly) to Shakira, and dishes. Essentially a normal night, just with dancing to Shakira. I would never do that when my roommates are home. I would never live it down.
