Day 3 of D.C.

Sunday, July 16th, 2017

Today with my job, we took students to the National Zoo. The National Zoo was kind of a bummer because most animals weren’t out yet. Some of the students were really disappointed. Helping students get a better perspective and shift their attitudes sometimes is a big part of the job.  I’m happy that things worked out eventually, but this is part of working in social situations, especially with students. Over time, Upward Bound has provided me with tons of experience with secondary students that I have been able to apply to my elementary teaching. Anyway, after the zoo, we got to tour Ford’s Theater and the African-American History Museum.

Day 2 of D.C. with Upward Bound

Saturday, July 15th, 2017

Today in D.C. with Upward Bound I had a lot to do. Right away in the morning, we headed off to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. It was a pretty sweltering day to begin with, so we began pushing sunblock on the students early. We took a tour through George Washington’s main house. It amazed me on how vibrant of colors his walls were painted. There were many intricate designs throughout the house. What amazed me even more however, was the grounds of Mount Vernon themselves. They were massive! We wondered around for a few hours in groups. There was a threshing barn, stables, and even a dock where there were boat tours. Afterward, we had a typical fast food lunch. The coolest part of the day was what happened next, which is that we visited the Natural History Museum AND the American History Museum! These Smithsonians rocked and I can’t believe we only spent 2 hours in each.

Upward Bound Training

Thursday, June 9th, 2016

The past two days I have been at training for Upward Bound! Upward Bound is a federally funded TRiO program we have on campus for low-income and first generation high school students. I was in this program, in fact me receiving a $5,000/year scholarship from CSS for being in it was a big reason why I chose CSS. In UB, high schoolers are assigned academic advisers, giving tutoring, ACT prep, fee waivers, and opportunities to visit colleges. They also attend a 5 week summer school program, which is where I come in. The students come from all over the Northland and stay in Somers for 5 weeks, living like college students (sort of), obviously, they need some RA figures. Here’s where I come in. My job is to mentor a group of roughly 10 and plan activities for them. Oh and make sure they don’t get into shenanigans. Before the kids come Sunday, Wednesday through Friday we are training. This training has a lot of protocol review and team bonding. We’ve covered mental health, crazy situations, and student internships. This year I’m handling the juniors who have internships as well, so that’ll be a bigger challenge. I only have one new coworker this year, although I’m already friends with her. We’ve been all vibing pretty great together and I love it. This is absolutely my favorite part of summer so I can’t wait til the kids get here Sunday.
