Bede Scholarship Award

Thursday, April 27th, 2017

Each year the library hosts a scholarship award for $250 to celebrate library’s and undergraduate research. Each student submits a scholarly paper from one of their courses paired with an essay on how they utilized the library resources to complete their paper. I entered this year with my paper on religion in Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight that I wrote in my British Literature course. While I didn’t win the scholarship, it was fun to hear about all the different essay topics that were submitted: social justice, English, philosophy, biology, and more. Oh, and I got some delicious cake as well!

Edible Book Contest Winners

Friday, March 10th, 2017

The winner of the edible book contest was the Where the Wild Things are pancake! Even though I am bummed that I didn’t win, I am happy the entry I voted for did! Second prize was to the Hungry Caterpillar cupcake arrangement and I got third place with my wizard of Oz rice crispy cake. This is such a fun competition to get people talking about books and the library. Thanks to everyone who voted!

Edible Book Competition

Monday, March 6th, 2017

This is my third year participating in the css library’s edible book competition. In the past I’ve done Dr. Seuss “Oh the places you’ll go” and Nancy Drew “The Secret at Shadow Ranch.” This year I chose the Wizard of Oz. The base is made of homemade rice crispies and frosting, the yellow brick road is made from frosting and starbursts, the emerald city is made of celery, and I have an airhead rainbow with marshmallow clouds. It took a few hours to make and was a lot of fun. Voting starts Wednesday and they announce the winners on Friday. I’m really hoping I place in the competition!

Book Hacks

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Get ready for the ultimate college book hack of the century: the public library! But seriously, over half of my books this semester were available through the Duluth Public Library downtown and a lot of people seem to forget that’s an option. Most textbooks aren’t available but almost all novels and a decent amount of supplemental material are. In addition to books, there are audio books, e-books, movies, and tons of events at the library and I love supporting it. Our public library even teaches people how to do taxes. WHAT!? I don’t even know what those are. Our Duluth Library is awesome because of awesome supporters like the Friends of the Library and the Duluth Library Foundation. I am a huge fan of both groups but I had the opportunity to work closely with the DLF through an internship. I got to build my resume and do awesome work promoting children’s literacy!

Study Time!

Thursday, November 10th, 2016

In order to have great study habits, you need to be able to know yourself. Are you able to study independently or with your friends? big space or small space? noise level, absolutely quiet, mediocre or don’t mind? and last but not least, around what time, morning, afternoon, evening or night?
