Lake Superior Gets Angry!

Monday, April 16th, 2018

There is no doubt that Lake Superior is upset about the delay of Spring weather here in the Northland. The waves from Lake Superior were crashing into the Canal Park shores the past few days during the most recent winter storm. My girlfriend and I thought it would be a good idea to go down and check out the “beauty” of the powerful Lake Superior. We may or may not have gotten a little too close and walked away soaked. It was quite the site along the Lakewalk as everything was covered in a thick layer of ice. There is always something new to see or witness around Duluth, if you are willing to brave the elements!

Lakewalk Duluth

Monday, April 9th, 2018

Ah yes, the infamous Lakewalk! Many visitors, tourists, and even locals find themselves on the Lakewalk in Canal Park throughout the year. Some running, some biking, some walking or stepping off to take scenic pictures of Lake Superior and the surrounding parks and landmarks of Duluth. However, many people don’t realize that the Lakewalk extends far beyond just Canal Park and the Fitgers complex. The Lakewalk is actually a 7.5 mile paved path that extends from the Bayfront Festival Park all the way out to Brighton Beach along the north end of Duluth. Check out the link below and if you find yourself looking for a great place to run, bike, or even watch ships come in/out of the harbor check out the link below for a map of the Lakewalk and some good locations to do those activities..

Canal Trip

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017

Today Upward Bound went to Canal Park as a group. We ate at Old Chicago and then split off into groups for our own interests. A few of my students and I collected sea glass at the beach. While we were sitting there, a giant wave came and knocked into us (okay, it was a foot tall) and washed away most of my sea glass. Nevertheless, we collected even more and brought back quite a few handfuls.

A Day in Canal

Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

After being downtown to work on the mural, I decided today was too nice to not go to Canal. So I did! All by myself. It was nice to be near the water. I found myself liking being alone because I could walk at my own pace, make my own plans… It was awesome. So I walked the Canal Park strip of the Lakewalk then settled into Caribou for an evening of homework. Canal Caribou was a nice surprise too, given that they’ve redesigned the seating areas since I’ve been here last.

The Many Faces of Duluth Weather

Sunday, February 19th, 2017

Yesterday I had the plans of going to the Lakewalk by myself just to get some fresh air and enjoy nature. It was so beautiful out, how could I not? Unfortunately, I didn’t wear good shoes for slush and traffic was really backed up in Canal. Today was attempt 2! I asked my friend Katharine to join me at the Rose Garden because she lives so close, and she said yes! I drove to the Rose Garden around 5 and when I stepped outside all I thought was “BRR”. The wind was so harsh I gave up and put a coat and mittens on. We walked all the way to Fitgers and back though, triumphantly against the cold sea air *pause for dramatic effect*. It was a good time but I was excited to go back to my apartment and curl up with a bowl of wild rice soup.
