Lake Superior Gets Angry!

Monday, April 16th, 2018

There is no doubt that Lake Superior is upset about the delay of Spring weather here in the Northland. The waves from Lake Superior were crashing into the Canal Park shores the past few days during the most recent winter storm. My girlfriend and I thought it would be a good idea to go down and check out the “beauty” of the powerful Lake Superior. We may or may not have gotten a little too close and walked away soaked. It was quite the site along the Lakewalk as everything was covered in a thick layer of ice. There is always something new to see or witness around Duluth, if you are willing to brave the elements!

First “Saltie” of 2018 Season

Friday, April 13th, 2018

With the 2018 shipping season under way here on the Great Lakes, it also means that sea-going vessels, also known as “Salties”, will be making their way in and out of the twin ports. Last night the first “saltie” of the season, Federal Weser, arrived in Duluth. The Federal Weser will be headed to Algeria next after loading up durum wheat her at the CHS terminal in Superior. Below are the two news articles of the “Saltie’s” arrival and the last link, Marine Traffic, is an awesome new application for those who enjoy staying up-to-date with the shipping news and location of vessels. Happy Ship Watching!

Brighton Beach, Duluth

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

Brighton Beach is a public park area located just north of downtown Duluth. It sits right on the shore of Lake Superior and offers many beautiful views of the lake and of the city. In the summer, you’ll find people swimming, walking, grilling, and spending time looking for agates. In the winter, you’ll find people walking their dogs, enjoying the views, and climbing around on ice covered rocks. This is one of my favorite spots in Duluth because you feel you are in a secluded place, yet you can see the lift bridge and downtown just a few miles away. I went here recently with my friend from UMD, who I graduated high school with. We walked around, talked, took in the views, and of course climbed around on the rocks, hoping to not get splashed by an ice cold wave. If you ever want a place to go and relax and take in the Duluth, MN views, this is the place to go, being only 15 minutes from campus.

Shipping Season Begins

Thursday, March 29th, 2018

Living in Duluth, you will quickly come to learn that Lake Superior is arguably the biggest attraction of this wonderful place. Whether you are on campus in the 4th floor of Tower, in the new Health Science Building on the third floor, or just driving along the Duluth hillside you will often find yourself looking out towards the lake. Lake Superior becomes something you become accustomed to watching and appreciating in all it’s beauty. When doing so you will also notice BIG ships going in and out of the Duluth Harbor under the infamous Lift Bridge.

Fun-tivities in Duluth: Frozen Lake Superior

Saturday, January 13th, 2018

A friend and I have been going out and about exploring Duluth and going as far north as Silver Bay. We might not have time during the semester and we figured it best to chase adventure while we can! Of the fun things we have been doing, I really enjoyed walking on a frozen section of Lake Superior near Park Point. This was my first time venturing off the shores of Superior and on foot!
