Fall Drum Feast

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

I attended the Fall Drum Feast today in the Jiimaan Abiwin (Tower 3115). It’s hosted  by the Indigenous Student Alliance (ISA) once in the fall and spring. It’s a powerful celebration. My first time going was last spring, and absolutely loved it. We started the celebration with a talk by the leader, and then tobacco was passed around for each person to hold. After that smoke was passed around as a way to cleanse ourselves. Once we all had a chance to cleanse ourselves, the leader started his second talk in Ojibwe (he translated it afterwards). He gave thanks to the spirits for protecting us, and reminded us that we in this earth cannot live without things in our world- nature, but nature can survive without us. He reminded us that we all have a purpose in this world, and that if we’re having a hard time to ask the spirits to help us. The ceremony was very powerful for me. I needed to heard those words. After the his talk he and 3 other men sang 4 songs and played the drum. It was beautiful.
