Last Day Before Spring Semester Starts

Monday, January 16th, 2017

Knowing that today was the last day of Christmas break I decided to go out fishing with one of my teammates that I played baseball with at CSS. We went out to Fish Lake Reservoir, approximately 25 minutes from Duluth. It was an early morning wake up call (5:30 am), that got us out on the ice and fishing by 7:15. It was a chilly morning with a beautiful sunrise over the lake. It turned out to be one of the nicest winter days Duluth has seen this year. Although we only caught 2 fish, 1 crappie and 1 northern pike, we had an absolute blast. It is always nice to enjoy the great outdoors in and around Duluth and do some catching up with a good friend.

Aquarium Visit

Monday, March 7th, 2016

Saturday was my Life Science’s mandatory field trip to the Great Lakes Aquarium. This is the third time I’ve been there, always with groups, so I’ve always gotten in free! Last time I went was with my Science Methods class, where we focused on a lot the lesson kits the aquarium has to offer teachers. Duluth has so many museums and history centers that teachers can use, so we’re always applying them to our classroom lessons. We went to the aquarium with my class Saturday to focus on two things, the biology information the aquarium offers, as well as the teacher resources. Our first part of the day we explored teacher resources. Afterward, we got to go into the basement and look at all the behind the scene stuff. And I mean everything. Even the dead fish that were frozen for study! Afterward, we did get stuck with a huge packet of questions, so we got scattered all over trying to find the answers in time, as well as figure out to do a lesson plan for half a day at the aquarium. Which was also another assignment. After lunch, we went to a UMD research boat vessel and learned about what they do there. But the aquarium was definitely the bet part! It was even the otter’s birthday!
