Out and about

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019

Today, in Field Biology, we went out to test the soil of the sample area we’re using for a field study. We randomly selected a 10×10 meters sector within the area we’re investigating and tested the cohesiveness, grittiness and water capacity of the soil. I could go into further detail about the exact procedure, but the point is that it was sunny and above freezing, and it was nice to be out. In my experience, it is difficult to find excuses to stay outside as the weather gets colder around October, but Field Biology is giving me a fantastic excuse to be outdoors!

Advisement Week

Friday, October 11th, 2019

It has begun! Advisement week for next spring is here. Today I met with my advisor. Since I am graduating in December, there was nothing related to class registration to talk about, so instead, we triple checked I have fulfilled all the requirements for graduation and chatted about my future plans. We also took the opportunity to talk about the past and learn how the other ended up here. It took sitting down with a professor I’ve come to admire a few months before graduating to realize that I have, in fact, grown quite fond of this ruthlessly cold, isolated place!

Fall is here!

Wednesday, September 25th, 2019

Fall, my favorite season in Minnesota, is finally here! Changing leaves, beautiful colors, warm weather… the only thing that could compete with it is Spring, but since Spring doesn’t arrive in Minnesota until late may (and school ends in early may + I leave as soon as we’re done), the magical week during which Fall happens is unparalleled. The 7 minute walk from Kerst (where I’m currently living) to Tower (the main building) is slightly miserable in winter, but right now it is my favorite part of the day!

Moving in

Sunday, September 8th, 2019

Today, I arrived in Duluth! I had entirely forgotten what green Duluth looks like. On the other hand, the weather felt familiarly cold, but it still surprises me how 10C can feel cold after summer and quite warm after winter. It is supposed to rain a lot this week; not atypical for fall in Duluth, but in my experience when it rains here it rains cats and dogs, so I can’t imagine it will rain with that intensity all week.In spite of the weather, though, it is exciting to be back. There’s a plethora of outdoor of activities one can do in the fall here, and I plan to take full advantage of the next couple of weeks!

Microbiology

Sunday, June 23rd, 2019

Part of the chemistry course I took last semester involved biochemistry. I found it fascinating (and the ancient idea of human thermodynamics even more so, albeit quite unattainable at this point in time), so I am taking microbiology with the intent of expanding my knowledge of the biological underpinnings of the body. I will be taking this class online and I’ve heard the professor ya built a robust platform for it, so I’m looking forward to it!
