Philosophy of Survival

Saturday, November 2nd, 2019

On Friday evening I attended a lecture on the Philosophy of Survival. The lecture itself took place at UMD, but their faculty happens to get along well with ours and we’re only a 15 minute walk away from each other, so shared events and lectures are relatively common. Indeed, it was the current chair of the department who sent us the flyer, and the topic being so psychology related, I couldn’t miss it!

African Heritage Night

Sunday, April 7th, 2019

“Free food” might be the biggest buzz word on campus, but quality free food is rather uncommon. This is why yesterday was special. In collaboration with UMD, St. Scholastica students organized a traditional feast followed by a series of shows honoring African culture. The massive buffet was full of delicious food typical of countries from all throughout Africa, and it was brought directly from specialized restaurants in the cities. There were over 20 different things, and you could choose to try as many as you could fit in your generously sized plate. Contrary to my expectations, none of them were spicy, but the quality of the food easily exceeded all expectations! As for the shows, I unfortunately can’t say I witnessed them first hand, but I have heard–and feel obliged to report–that they were outstanding!

Safe Haven + Scholastica Collaboration

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

Today Sarah Brokke Erickson’s Dignitas class and a few others (including me!) Went to work on the murals at the Prove. A lot of work was done yesterday, so today our jobs were to build on that and add details. Paintings require lots and lots of layers… You always think you have enough paint and you totally don’t. Today we had some special guests join us working on the mural. Children came to work with us today and it was awesome! A lot of us were assigned painting buddies and we worked with the kids. My buddy and I painted a lot of water currents. I think it’s so cool that the kids are able to invest in and interact with the painting that will go in their current home. I think it really infuses a sense of identity and ownership. Stay tuned for more painting updates! We’ll be working on the mural until April!

Community Day Collaboration

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017

During Community Day, Sarah Brokke Erickson’s Dignitas class as well as a bunch of art folk joined together to work on two murals. That’s right, not just one, but TWO murals. They are quite this big as well this year. We had around 40 people in Prove Gallery. We also had students from Harbor City International School join us, which was really cool considering that one mural is for their school. We rotated people in and out on the mural, while others worked on little projects around the Prove. The Prove is a volunteer-based art gallery in Duluth, so it was especially important we helped them out. People painted bathrooms, doors, walls, cleaned and organized, everything under the sun. Good vibes were all around today.
