Last night we went camping. I recently bought a tent at the Outdoor Pursuit gear sale, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to go camping in the snow for a while. Now that it was barely below freezing and it had just snowed a lot last week, I found the perfect occasion! I was concerned the pads would not isolate us enough from the snow, but I found that for the most part they did. There was some condensation build up between the pad and the sleeping bags (which was to be expected), but the tent held up beautifully! I’m already looking forward to try it in a longer backpacking trip. For now, I can only say that being so close to nature is, without a doubt, one of my  favorite things about Duluth!

Let’s make some small-talk

Thursday, March 28th, 2019

Let’s talk about the weather. It is said this year has broken some records in terms of the most days below freezing temperature (around 60?), the coldest couple of days (about -50F with windchill) and the most snowfall in the month of February there’s been in years. A very quick google search has not entirely verified this gossip, but I do know for a fact that last time we felt warm air outside was around early October, there were a couple of days in which classes were cancelled due to the freezing temperature (it was the first time it happened since I’ve been here; reports of ~ -50F with windchill are, in fact, accurate) and there’s been A LOT of snow since Christmas until warm temperatures (now anything above freezing feels mildly warm) began to melt the snow about a week and a half ago (yes, it’s virtually April).

Cabin Fever is Real

Saturday, February 2nd, 2019

Many times we get too engrossed in life and don’t give much thought to real things affecting us. Cabin Fever, as I learnt, is one of those things. It represents a range of symptoms with varying degrees that result from long confinement or isolation indoors during the winter.

Freezing COLD!

‘DID YOU SIGN UP’ for this?

Oh jeez! I know I didn’t! Being an International student, commuting around to get and/or do things is as challenging as it gets. And with these extreme temperatures only added to the dull mood. But it was quite an experience.

The Many Faces of Duluth Weather

Sunday, February 19th, 2017

Yesterday I had the plans of going to the Lakewalk by myself just to get some fresh air and enjoy nature. It was so beautiful out, how could I not? Unfortunately, I didn’t wear good shoes for slush and traffic was really backed up in Canal. Today was attempt 2! I asked my friend Katharine to join me at the Rose Garden because she lives so close, and she said yes! I drove to the Rose Garden around 5 and when I stepped outside all I thought was “BRR”. The wind was so harsh I gave up and put a coat and mittens on. We walked all the way to Fitgers and back though, triumphantly against the cold sea air *pause for dramatic effect*. It was a good time but I was excited to go back to my apartment and curl up with a bowl of wild rice soup.
