Duluth Grill: an interview with Tom Hanson

“Legal Aspects of Management” is one of the classes I am taking this semester with Prof. Patrick Spott.

For one of his major assignments for the class grade, he gave us Business Owner Interview project. This had two parts to it; #1. we had to interview a business owner with 20 revenant questions and summarize those in a paper form, along with, #2. a brief 6-8 minute presentation on what was covered in the interview and take aways.

I interviewed Mr. Tom Hanson, the owner of Duluth Grill located in West Duluth. He has owned the restaurant for over 15 years and will have been in the industry for 40 years complete in month. I was fortunate enough to get him to squeeze in this interview as he had prior and serious engagements. It was an elaborate interview that lasts about an hour and a half. After the first couple minutes of formal introductions and tone setting, I handed him a copy of my questions and let him read through before we started so he had an idea of how he was going to answer them. We then began the interactive process of sharing and learning.

I was able to gain some really genuine and worthy insight about making, building and maintaining relationships. Tom shared a lot of his life story, as to how he decided to pick up this business, or go about not choosing to do something else. He focused a lot on the community aspect and definitely tried to promote his personal values through his business. I also learned about his love for Art, and how he incorporates that into his business assets. Tom’s bifurcation of designations is one that I really found to be interesting. He had each person on his core team take up an umbrella position along with an individual restaurant job. Personally, I thought it was genius!

I enjoyed interviewing Tom for this project and grasped a lot of reel life information utilized by a business.
