Getting Back into the Swing of Things (Literally)

2 of my classmates trying one of the therapy swings in the sensory integration room at Polinksy Rehabilitation Center

On Friday, we ended our first week back to school by touring the Pediatric Polinksy Rehabilitation Center. We learned about all the equipment they have for children who come into therapy there. They have two therapy gyms, and one of them is a sensory integration room, where they have swings, ball bit, zip line, and a play house (just to name a few) to help kids with sensory issues. For example, 2 of my classmates got to try out a swing that helps kids with vestibular issues (Vestibular-the system that is responsible for balance) Click on this link to see a video of my classmates trying out the exercise pictured above: IMG_3961

Looking at Pediatric walkers at Polinsky Rehab Center

Here is an example of walking equipment that some of the children may use, if they cannot walk on their own. They also had adaptive bikes, seats, toys, strollers, and harness to help children become more independent and be able to play and explore! Lifespan Application: Pediatrics, is a class that we are taking this spring that is more specialized than some of the classes that we have been taking in the past couple of semesters.
