    Pat's Bio:
My name is Pat Bigaouette. I am a Senior Biology major. I run on the cross country and track teams at Scholastica. I currently live in Somers Hall as the Residential Advisor for Ground Floor North. Also, I am actively involved in Scholastica's theater program and hope to get cast in one of the four shows this season. This summer I conducted clinical research at Hennepin County Medical Center in the Emergency room. I also traveled to New York City to pick up a friend from school and, of course, saw the show "Wicked" on Broadway.

Run the SWANNY!

For the first time, since freshman year, I will be able to run the Swanny! Whoooo! The Swanny is a race at the College of St. Scholastica that honors the first Physical Education Director, so…naturally we honor the Swanny by running around campus in ridiculous costumes.  This year there will be two races. A 5k run and a 2k walk. Both races will snake through the trails on campus. Who is pumped for lots of sweaty people barreling through the woods, falling over themselves (and their costumes) in an effort to win a water bottle? I am. Oh, did I mention the first 250 finishers win a state-of-the-art, limited edition Swanny water bottle? Oh yes they did…now I will have a water bottle to match my t-shirt from freshman year.

Swanny Costumes

The Swanny is meant to be fun. Let’s not pretend like its competitive. Freshman year, when I had Achilles tendonitis and ran in one of those fancy but bulky boots thing, I dominated at least half the runners. I feel like the Swanny if more of a fun power-walk through the woods that comes with a water bottle at the end than an actual run.

In fear that the competiveness has changed since my freshmen year, I did some research on the Swanny…this is what I found:

“The College of St. Scholastica has a long and proud history of being a leader in providing recreational and fitness programming for its students. Long before it became popular at most colleges, St. Scholastica gave voice to educating women in the virtues of recreation, wellness and fitness.

That voice was Gladys Swanson. Mrs. Swanson was the Physical Education Director from 1931 through the early 70’s. Today, Campus Rec’s motto is “Your Home for Recreation, Sport and Spirit!” We owe this long standing commitment of recreation and experiential learning to the foresight of the Benedictine Sisters and to the personal commitment of Gladys “Swanny” Swanson.”

Well there you have it…recreation, sport and spirit AND COSTUMES.

Off to lace up my shoes and throw on the costume.

Pat
