John Beargrease Dog Sled Marathon
On Sunday, January 27th, the annual John Beargrease Dog Sledding Marathon began. With the race starting at Billy’s Bar in Duluth at noon, hundreds of people huddled together to watch the chilly start. My roommates and I had never seen dog sled racing and decided we would go. They offered a free shuttle from UMD to Billy’s, which was a really nice and easy way to get there. The race began with the marathon teams, which would go to Grand Portage, MN. Following was the starts for the 120 mile race and 40 mile race. Seeing all the excitement in the dogs, mushers, and crowd made the trip worthwhile. I recommend going next year to see all the event has to offer!
