John Beargrease 2016

After 4 winters of telling myself I would, I finally went to watch the start of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Race (2016). This year it started further up north than usual – a few miles North of Two Harbors, MN. i drove up with my buddy Brody, his girlfriend, and Brody’s dad who just so happened to be a past John Beargrease musher. It was pretty neat to  hear some of the lingo used and talk strategy with a past John Beargrease musher, Bill Olson, on the the way up to the race. I also learned some of the in’s and out’s of sled dog training and racing.

Prior to the race I got to meet three time and now four time champion (2016) John Bear Grease Marathon winner Nathan Schroeder’s lead dog, Chief. It was a really cool experience and one I’m looking forward to going back to. Pretty crazy to think these guys and gals made the trip up to Grand Portage and back in less than 3 days! 383 miles of snow covered trails, through the day and night, with no more than 14 dogs and a lightly packed sled!

To check out more go to http://www.beargrease.com/index.htm to read about the race, the mushers, and more.
