Chilly Dogs – Sled Dog Trips

My younger brother and his girlfriend recently visited Duluth to ring in the new year of 2018. Not only did they want to enjoy the sites and happenings of Duluth for a few days in the sub zero temps, but they decided to start their new year’s day off with some dog sledding.

Through some mutual friends and recommendations, they found a place up in Ely, MN called Chilly Dogs, a family run business by the Hway’s. To say the least, their experience was amazing. Their trip consisted of “The Snowy Owl Run”, a 3 hour total trip, with an hour spent on the trial going approximately 8 miles. Below are some photos of their trip. They said that they will be going back in the future with the hopes of doing an overnight trip.

If dog sledding is something you are interested in during your time at the College of St. Scholastica, you can do some quick google searching to find some places in the northland that offer that service (Chilly Dogs, Outward Bound, Wolfsong Adventures, White Wilderness, etc.). You can also check out the CSS Outdoor Pursuit webpage and stayed tuned to the activities on their calendar, because they have done dog sledding trips in the past. Other ways to get your dog sledding fix as a spectator while up in Duluth is to watch the start and finish of the John Beargrease sled dog marathon, which will be going on from January 26-28 of 2018.

Whether the temps are in the positives or negatives, the winter months in Duluth are full of fun activities and adventure!

Another photo from the trip – As one person did the “mushing”, the other got to sit in the sled and take in the trail from the dogs’ eye-level.

Photo my brother took while on the trail during his New Year’s day dog sledding trip with Chilly Dogs.
