Phage Update

11.7.13 QC Gel

 

Update from my bacteriaphage class!! We have isolated our DNA from our phage. Pictured is what is known as ‘gel electrophoresis.’ We place our unknown DNA samples next to known concentrations of DNA. We then run an electrical current through the gel. Because DNA is negatively charged it runs towards the positively charged area. This creates a spread. In this case, the larger the spread the more the DNA. Ours is the 9th column from the left.

What are the next steps?
Well, now that numerous people in the class have isolated DNA we have to decide who’s DNA gets sequenced. We’ll vote this upcoming Tuesday and go from there!
