Weekend Sea Kayaking

My weekend was spent away from the hustle-and-bustle of the city, and instead by a lake just off the shores of Lake Superior in the middle of the north woods.

I had the wonderful opportunity of leading a weekend sea kayaking trip to the Apostle Islands for the Outdoor Pursuit program with a few of my OP! co-guides. Unfortunately, we did not get to paddle on Superior to the Islands, but we did make the most of our trip at a lakeside campground just south of Bayfield, Wisconsin.

We spent the weekend relaxing by the water, soaking up the last bits of the summer sun, and paddling on the beautiful inland lake. Due to insanely large wave swells and strong winds Saturday morning, we, as leaders, had to advise against our original plan of paddling to Sand Island and the sea caves there. Instead, we headed back to our campsite from the night before and spent the rest of our time there

The participants who came along on the trip were troopers. After the news of the breaking waves, crazy winds and our decision to stay on the mainland, many spirits were let down, but before I knew it they had all bounced back and become excited for what the rest of the trip had in store. We spent the rest of our Saturday practicing yoga together in the sun overlooking Lake Superior, exploring the small town of Bayfield, and paddling on the inland lake.

Overall, it was a really fun weekend in the outdoors with some super cool people, and I’m glad I was able to be a part of making this trip happen. I really do love sharing what I love with others. The outside world is a wonderful place to be, especially in Duluth and surrounding areas, and it makes me happy to see so many people taking advantage of these wonderful opportunities.
