Stumbling Upon Family History

This semester, I am in the course Media, Race, and Gender. It has been a wondrous and eye-opening experience thus far and only continues to broaden my base of knowledge about the world around me. Our current assignment is to write a short autobiography about our family history. The report will be based upon our ancestors’ situations, in regards to their race, ethnicity, and interactions with other people, when they came to The United States of America years ago. My curiosity throughout this process, led me to finding more information on my Great Great Great Aunt Carrie Chapman Catt, who was a leader in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. In the first image, Catt stands at the head of the automobile ‘The Golden Flyer’ that would travel across the country for Women’s Suffrage. In the second, Catt poses with Dr. Anna Shaw, who was another activist in the fight for women’s rights. I am fascinated by how closely I am related to the effort and success the Women’s Suffrage Movement had, and I am grateful for the courses I am having the opportunity to take while at CSS. This course, especially, is helping me to become more aware of the issues that people in our country, and around the world, are facing now.
