    Courtney's Bio:
I'm an Elementary Education major at CSS. I also plan to minor in Spanish. Having done PSEO, I came to CSS with more than 60 credits. I'm part of Volunteers Involved Through Action (VITA), Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF), and other clubs! Dance has been part of my life for 10 years, and now I'm trying to fit it into my schedule again. I love spending time watching Supernatural and Once Upon a Time, and reading Harry Potter and other great books. I live in a suite with 3 other girls, and we are always finding something fun to do around campus!

Upward Bound Training

The past two days I have been at training for Upward Bound! Upward Bound is a federally funded TRiO program we have on campus for low-income and first generation high school students. I was in this program, in fact me receiving a $5,000/year scholarship from CSS for being in it was a big reason why I chose CSS. In UB, high schoolers are assigned academic advisers, giving tutoring, ACT prep, fee waivers, and opportunities to visit colleges. They also attend a 5 week summer school program, which is where I come in. The students come from all over the Northland and stay in Somers for 5 weeks, living like college students (sort of), obviously, they need some RA figures. Here’s where I come in. My job is to mentor a group of roughly 10 and plan activities for them. Oh and make sure they don’t get into shenanigans. Before the kids come Sunday, Wednesday through Friday we are training. This training has a lot of protocol review and team bonding. We’ve covered mental health, crazy situations, and student internships. This year I’m handling the juniors who have internships as well, so that’ll be a bigger challenge. I only have one new coworker this year, although I’m already friends with her. We’ve been all vibing pretty great together and I love it. This is absolutely my favorite part of summer so I can’t wait til the kids get here Sunday.
