Northern lights?
Ever since I arrived to Duluth, I’ve been tantalized with the promise of being able to see northern lights during the winter. Having seen them before during a trekking trip in Iceland, I wasn’t eager enough to stay all night at Boulder Lake hoping to see them, but I had a wonderful time stargazing with some friends. The conditions were ideal: clear skies, no light contamination, and there was a solar storm. In theory, this last yields the conditions under which you might be able to see northern lights; in practice, the other two produced the perfect condition for stargazing. It was quite nice to enjoy that feeling of openness and clarity you get in long backpacking trips only 30 minutes away from home!
