Chemistry of Beer
Unbelievable enough, this is a course at The College of St. Scholastica! Yes, we do have exams, and no, the exam doesn’t consist on only drinking beer—although correctly identifying different beers (by tasting them, obviously) is part of it!
The class is structured around the brewing process, and as the name indicates, we look at this process from a chemical perspective. Although there is no chemistry prerequisite (all the chemistry you need to know is taught in class), chemistry is omnipresent in the course. We began the course overviewing basic chemistry, we continued understanding the brewing process through these lens, and now that we’re working on brewing our own beer for class (yes, this will be part of our final grade), in class we are talking of the chemical underpinnings of the fermentation process. Definitely a practical, lighthearted complement to the organic and biochemistry course I’m concurrently taking!
