Intramural Halloween Costume Contest

Sunday, October 20th, 2019

This week is the final week of block one intramural sports, meaning it is playoffs! Playoffs are a fun time for all the teams because it is when they get the opportunity to win a championship shirt and bragging rights with their teammates. During playoff week this year there is also a Halloween costume contest happening! The team that dresses the best in each league will win SuperOne gift cards. And of course at the scorekeeper table there will be candy to enjoy for all who play! I am really hoping to see some great costumes this week and celebrate the teams who become champions.

Talking with Professors

Thursday, October 10th, 2019

One of my favorite things about St. Scholastica is how approachable professors are. In fact, they all seem quite eager to engage in interesting, relevant conversations once prompted. Today, I went to the office hours of one of my professors to ask him some questions about an upcoming exam, and we ended up having a 2-hour long conversation about the chemical evolution of the universe, and whether humans have free will on the basis of us being product of such evolution. It was fascinating!

Grad School Workshop

Monday, October 7th, 2019

Today, the university hosted a graduate school workshop. Career services worked alongside the psychology, philosophy and mathematics department to give an overview of what the graduate school application process looks like, and share some insights about how best to do it. Career services shared their expertise in CV’s, resumes, cover letters and personal statements; the psychology department expanded on the personal statement and talked about the importance of reaching out to professors, having research experience and preparing with adequate time; finally, the philosophy and math departments focused on the two verbal and quantitative components of the GRE, respectively. In all, it was a pretty exhaustive overview, and definitely worth attending if you’re considering to apply to grad school in the future!

Driving for the Job Fair

Thursday, October 3rd, 2019

Every year, Career Services organizes a shuttle going from St. Scholastica to wherever the annual job fair in the area is taking place. Last year it was at the University of Wisconsin, Superior, and this year it was at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. As per usual, recruiters from all over the state came to hire freshly minted undergraduates in all sorts of fields. As last year, this year I drove the shuttle going to and from the job fair. It was interesting to drive people to the fair as I heard about their hopes and aspirations, and then see how it went for them on the way back!

Philosophical Events

Tuesday, October 1st, 2019

Yesterday, the Philosophy department organized a get-together. It was an informal gathering simply geared towards mingling with the faculty and having an excuse to engage in casual conversation about philosophical topics. We bandied possible movies to watch during the semester, discussed last week’s lecture on reparative justice, and chatted about the experience of being a professional philosopher. It is quite a nice life: you get paid to think about the things which interest you. In truth, how could any job be better than that?
