Career Exploration Class

Yesterday, it was professional dress up day for my career exploration course. The class starts at 11:45 am but my day starts at 9:15 am. This means I had to professionally dress up early in the morning up until my third-hour class. It was very funny seeing people’s reaction when they first saw me. They were probably asking themselves “what is this kid doing in a suit on early Wednesday morning?”

The course is designed for students to explore majors, learn and develop network skills, understanding strengths, and improving resumes and LinkedIn profiles. Yesterday’s event was based on panelist who our professor contacted based on our desired majors. The panelist introduced were leaders of our Duluth community with high positions in areas of accounting, finance, economics, software development, computer science and so on. I had the privilege to meet a very successful senior accountant from Lake Superior Consulting. She offered insights of her career role, advice to stand out among others, and advice to cope with struggles. In addition, my professor gave her my third draft of my resume the day before and she took the time to write suggestions based on her experiences and also sent out copies of my resume to her colleagues for more suggestions. Overall, it was a great day. I learned so much and became much more motivated to reach my ultimate career goals.
