    Amanda's Bio:
I grew up in the Twin Cities, but now live up in Ely, MN near the BWCA, where my family has been for the last 7 years. I have three brothers, who I adore, and I enjoy fishing, playing basketball, and rough housing with them whenever I can. My mom has been a daycare provider since I was born, which served as inspiration for me to pursue a degree in Elementary education. I also love to paint, draw, and DANCE! I have been dancing for twenty years and am a dance instructor in Superior, WI....I can't imagine a life without it!

New Students: Planning Ahead

Are you going to be an incoming freshman to the college this year? Are you returning to college after a break or transferring from another institution? If you are, this is a good time to begin looking ahead at the upcoming school year and preparing for what’s in store. Some useful tasks to complete and “check off” the student checklist include:

  1. For transfer students, check your credit-transfer record with the registrar on campus and ensure that all of your previous class credits will transfer from the institution you previously attended.  This will aid in your registration process and help determine what classes you will need.
  2. Check your registration status and housing.  Make sure that a spot is secured on campus or off campus for housing and that you were able to register for your classes without any holds on your account.
  3. For incoming freshmen, begin to think about what college items you will need to purchase for the year.  It is sometimes easiest to find these items/furniture prior to move-in weekend to get the best deals and better quality.  I highly recommend taking advantage of hometown stores and watching for their summer ads to get items on sale, as well as checking out local garage sales (which can sometimes be a treasure trove for otherwise expensive appliances and items).

Some things to plan for are…

  • Mattress toppers
  • Comforters
  • Towels
  • Bath Caddies
  • Television
  • DVD player
  • Space rugs
  • Mini fridges
  • Microwave
  • Lamps
  • Alarm Clock
  • Hygiene items
  • Basic cookware (bowls, frying pan, silverware)

4.   Apply for your loans and/or apply for the FAFSA.  This will help determine what aid will be available to you                                                for tuition payments, or if living off-campus, housing payments.
