    Amanda's Bio:
I grew up in the Twin Cities, but now live up in Ely, MN near the BWCA, where my family has been for the last 7 years. I have three brothers, who I adore, and I enjoy fishing, playing basketball, and rough housing with them whenever I can. My mom has been a daycare provider since I was born, which served as inspiration for me to pursue a degree in Elementary education. I also love to paint, draw, and DANCE! I have been dancing for twenty years and am a dance instructor in Superior, WI....I can't imagine a life without it!

First Day as a Student Teacher :)

Today I began my final adventure into the college pursuit of a teaching degree.  I had my very first day in my kindergarten classroom student teaching, and I must say it went wonderfully.  The kids were a lot of fun, highly energetic and full of youthful thoughts and ideas.  We started out the day doing morning meeting and some singing/dancing, which was a blast.  Then, the kiddos received their jobs for the week and talked about their long vacations a little bit as a class.

We jumped right into reading and phonemic awareness/phonics activities, and this week the focus is on the letter Bb.  We practiced saying words with the beginning Bb sound and recognizing the letter in different sentences and passages.  The kids really enjoyed thinking of words that they knew from their everyday life and family that reflected the letter!  Then, we read a book about weather and the kids did a drawing activity where they illustrated their comprehension by illustrating themselves in one of the types of weather we read about in the story.  Some of the drawings were super detailed and creative (especially for such young children!).

We did calendar math, had time in learning centers, talked about our New Year’s promises, and spent some time doing free play activities such as using Play doh, blocks, and Polly Pockets.  My favorite highlight from today (which is difficult, since everything was new and exciting for me today!) I would have to say was read aloud time.  My cooperating teacher read the students a Clifford story, but instead of simply reading it and having them listen, chose a member of the class to hold a flashlight on the story and read in the dark!  It was super relaxing for the kids and fun to see reading take on an unusual format.  Awesome!

I can’t wait for tomorrow and hope it goes just as smoothly as it did today 🙂
