Baptisms: The Meaning

Today, my godson is being baptized. Most understand in a general sense what a baptism entails: an individual is blessed by a priest or liturgical minister in the presence of their families and is either fully immersed or half-immersed in water. The ceremony had been going on since the time of Jesus, and the majority of Christian children are baptized within the first couple months of life. So what exactly is the purpose of baptism and what makes it a crucial experience?

When we have a child or adult baptized, they are being welcomed into the church and are being bathed in the Holy Spirit. The water with which the Christian community baptizes is holy, meaning it has been blessed and is sacred. It marks the individual’s start of life anew, one in which they will embrace God and follow his ways. Baptism acts as an allegiance. It marks the start of a life in which we place our trust and faith in the Lord and live a life in which He can be truly proud.

Aside from the Christian meaning behind baptism, it also serves as a time to celebrate family, provide support for the parents of the new child or adult being baptized, and to acknowledge the beauty and strength of the church. The godparents of the child or adult pledge their support and guidance for the baptized individual, and will forever more be a presence in their lives. Today, this is what I am able to pledge in front of my church and family. I cannot wait to be apart of this beautiful little boy’s life! 🙂
