Last week, I met with my two academic advisors to go over my plan for my last academic year at CSS! You might be wondering how I ended up with two academic advisors, instead of the institutionally recognized one advisor per student. Well, the story goes that in my freshman year I expressed interest in double majoring in Mathematics and Computer Information Systems(CIS). Throughout freshman year, my Dignitas instructor played the dual role of my academic advisor as well. Beginning sophomore year, I was assigned a new and permanent advisor (a Math professor) and I approached one of my CIS professors to help with planning my CIS schedule. This, in short, is how I got a second and informal advisor!

This week and next mark a period of minor anxieties and brief futurism as most students and faculty look ahead to plan coursework and check curriculum guides. During this time, students meet with their advisors and get help with registering for classes, checking in on how things are going so far, etc. I have already scheduled a meeting with my advisor, Dr Ren, and look forward to getting advice and just catching up (outside class time!)

CSS is great and there’s so much to learn during your time here that one might feel quite overwhelmed by it all, and if you are anything like me, you will start scouring around looking for all, and any, resources to get you started or  point you in the right direction to excellence. Once you become a CSS student, you are assigned an advisor through a magic sorting hat (just kidding – well Tower Hall is dubbed Hogwarts so this statement might be true to an extent!) and your job is pretty much to utilize that resource, among others, in order to steer yourself on the right path to graduation (that’s the goal eventually, even if you start your own Facebook or company in a garage or dorm room and drop out).

Although I am graduating this semester, my advisor still wanted to meet with me during advisement week to see how things were going.  We talked about job preparation and looking for jobs.  This really made me realize that I need to get going on that!  It’s really nice to have people who care about how you’re doing and what your plans are for the future.  It’s also really encouraging because I know that I can go to my advisor if I need help with anything, such as looking over my resume or helping me connect to alumni in the field.

So Friday I had my advisement meeting with my adviser. Once you are a sophomore, you are assigned or can request a specific adviser within your major. I have Rachel Payne, one of the super cool, awesome, main Elementary Education professors. She is so freaking awesome. Everyone loves her and I feel very fortunate to have her as my adviser. She is definitely a role model for teaching and just attitude of life. I really admire her, which you should if you have the right adviser, because they are your mentor in a way! So anyway, I had advisement with her, and after this semester I’ll only have ONE semester left with classes… then on to student teaching! EEEEEK. I AM ALMOST DONE. I just have to register next week. I’ll be taking 16 credits next semester and I’m so excited. So. excited. AHH.
